Death Stranding is set in a post-apocalyptic future in the former United States of America, devastated by an invasion of ghostly creatures from another world. The player controls Sam (Norman Reedus), a courier tasked with traversing the continent and connecting isolated settlements. Death Stranding combines free-roaming, open-world gameplay where players must navigate their way to their next destination, with lengthy cinematic cutscenes rendered in-game using motion capture technology. The core gameplay revolves around transporting valuable packages from one settlement to another, while avoiding loss or damage to the cargo. The game features sophisticated off-road traversal mechanics and asynchronous multiplayer elements.
