Fallout 4 is a sequel to the acclaimed post-apocalyptic series, taking place several years after the events of Fallout 3. The game's protagonist is the sole survivor of Vault 111, located near Boston. Fate forces the protagonist to leave their home and embark on a perilous adventure, where mutants, raiders, mercenaries, and various natural hazards stand in their way. The fourth installment in the series differs from its predecessors in its new setting—Boston and its environs—as well as several changes to the gameplay mechanics. For example, the SPECIAL role-playing system has been reworked, the protagonist has learned to modify weapons and rebuild war-torn settlements. Power armor, the game's mascot, is no longer a panacea for all ills—it requires nuclear batteries. The dialogue system has also been reworked—in the fourth installment, most missions can be completed without engaging in combat with characters.
