The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth allows the player to play through the Good and Evil campaigns set during the War of the Ring, as depicted in Peter Jackson's trilogy, with minor gameplay variations. Each campaign has its own ending. The Free Peoples (Gondor and Rohan) focus on a variety of heroes, such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Théoden, Éomer, and others. The Dark Forces (Mordor and Isengard) rely primarily on their hordes of orcs, Uruk-hai, evil humans, and monsters such as trolls and Mûmak. While Good battalions typically contain fewer soldiers than Evil hordes, their strength is roughly equal—humans are much better trained and equipped than orcs and Uruk-hai. The Good campaign begins in Moria, where the player must slay the Balrog in a one-on-one duel with Gandalf the Grey. After this, Gandalf becomes White and gains additional abilities. The final battle of the Good campaign is the assault on the Black Gate of Mordor, giving Frodo time to destroy the One Ring. The Evil campaign begins with the felling of the trees in Isengard and the first open skirmish with the Rohirrim, and ends with the siege of Minas Tirith.
